It’s been a busy few weeks since my last post. Common Threads had their One Year On mini exhibition as part of Bradford School of Art’s Summer Show, I’ve been down to London to scope out New Designers, we attended Sue G’s memorial and I made art pieces out of some of my weaving for Northwich Art Show’s Grand Day Out.

Repost from Common Threads: The Heartache Behind the Silence
The day after my last blog post, my father was rushed to hospital, giving us all a scare. He is thankfully much better now, but that week marked the start of a tumultuous period of illness and loss in my family that finally cumulated at the end of April with the news in the blogpost I wrote on Friday for Common Threads.…
Wowsers!
My last post was 6 weeks ago and what a prolific 6 weeks it was!
I created a double cloth design for the Bradford Textile Design Competition (that deserves a post of its own at a later date) and have also been working on items for the One Year On part of the Bradford School Of Art Summer Show in June (again, a dedicated post will be written when I’ve produced more!) but most of my Nicola Rudd Textile work has revolved around this:
When I created this collage last year, I knew I wanted a collection based on the different brickwork patterns, using double weave to isolate solid blocks of colour.
…Harnessing Creativity
Creativity is a funny thing. I spent my teenage years utterly convinced I was no good at art, due to a comment from my art teacher, which I now wonder was actually poorly worded or my misinterpretation of what was actually said (Although this was the 1980s, and certainly full of comments and actions from teachers that would have horrified anyone on my PGCE course ten years later).

So much work… but where’s the weaving?
Good question! I’ve spent the last couple of weeks really pushing forward with getting Yarns From The Plain back up and running whilst simultaneously working on the development of workshops. I was delighted to work with my first one-to-one student this week; we covered a huge amount of ground in one day, but I was able to do so because I knew her previous experience with rigid heddle weaving and could build on that.
…Fancy learning a new skill?
It’s been a little quiet on the weaving front here recently, in no small part because I have been spending some time reviewing both Nicola Rudd Textiles and my hand dye business Yarns From The Plain and planning out a way forward for the two.

So excited… but so very, very nervous!
Remember those samples I showed you earlier this month? The fine silk ones? I took them along with me to a couple of meetings at the end of November, to show the range of materials and work Common Threadsundertake. I’m delighted to say that those meeting were successful and I’m thrilled to be able to tell you that Common Threads now have a couple of exhibitions in the diary!
